Create and Carlow Arts Festival
Artist Residency Award

Open Call

Create and Carlow Arts Festival invite applications from collaborative artists from ethnic minority backgrounds who are based in the Republic of Ireland, for a residency award with Carlow Arts Festival. The Residency will begin in May, and run to June, to incorporate this interdisciplinary festival which takes place from 4- 9 June 2019*. The residency is funded through the Arts Council of Ireland’s Artist in the Community Scheme, which is managed by Create. This residency opportunity, which aims to support an artist from an ethnic minority to develop their collaborative and socially engaged arts practice, is offered through a partnership between Create and Carlow Arts Festival.

Deadline: 5pm, 18th March 2019

About the award

This award seeks to support cultural diversity in collaborative artistic practice in Ireland. We welcome applications from artists in all disciplines but particularly those from the Performing Arts, as this Residency does not offer studio space. This residency seeks to provide a platform for the selected artist to develop and/or consolidate collaborative arts practice, and will provide an opportunity for the artist to make contacts and identify resources, that may assist in the further development of their practice in Ireland.

What the award involves

The award offers living accommodation for the period of the residency in Carlow (if the awarded artist is in a position to take up the accommodation - this is not a condition of the award) and desk space at the Carlow Arts Festival office.

The award also allows the artist access to all events at the festival, to the other artists included, and access to the delivery and programming team, advice or a combination of these elements, and an appropriate stipend.

The successful applicant will meet both Create and CAF ahead of the residency in an initial development phase to discuss in more detail how the opportunity can be best tailored to the artist’s needs, vis a vis space, additional supports and logistics in terms of travel and accommodation if required.

Making an application

See Guidelines for Create/ Carlow Arts Festival Artist Residency Awards 2019.

* The residency is to the value of four calendar weeks, which will be structured with the artist during an initial development phase.

Create is the national development agency for collaborative arts. We are a resource organisation for artists working across artforms, in social and community contexts. We encourage innovative and creative models of engagement that extend and enrich arts engagement and participation with multiple publics and diverse communities of interest and of place. Create offers a range of services for artists and arts organisations which include Professional Development and Advisory Sessions, Mentoring, Research, Learning Development and Commissioning and Project opportunities. We work through partnerships with arts and civil society organisations on initiatives that support and develop collaborative arts practice, nationally and internationally. Create’s mission is to lead the development of collaborative arts practice in Ireland, create opportunities for exchange and interaction that benefit a wide constituency of artists, sectors and communities, strengthen the contribution of the arts to society, and encourage artists and communities to create art that reflects and responds to our times.

Carlow Arts Festival is a vibrant multi-disciplinary festival built on our deep belief in creating space for discovery, delight and disruption. Our International programme embraces the world of virtuosic artists to resonate, inspire and collaborate with our community. We champion the need for audiences to experience transformative art, to encounter diverse perspectives and through participation to be included in the act of discovery.
