Artists and speakers: Dr Susanne Burns; Lindsey Fryer, Tate Liverpool; Lynnette Moran; Joshua Sofaer; Minna Tarka, m-cult; Aaron Wright, Live Art Development Agency; and a virtual keynote from Professor Grant Kester.

On the 29th of May in Dublin, Create will host a one-day symposium with collaborative artists and those interested in collaborative methodologies, alongside our partners and contributors to this programme, which has been funded under the EU/Ireland Presidency. The main aim of the day is to gain a greater understanding of the professional development needs of artists across artforms who choose to locate themselves within a collaborative or collective practice. On the day, we will encourage reflection on potential support mechanisms and encourage those artists present to consider themselves and their practice in relation to important trends within the international ecology of collaborative practice. The day will have an active learning framework which encourages and welcomes input from all attending.

KEY QUESTIONS to inform the day:

•    Collaborative Practice – the new avant-garde?
•    Authorship, levels of participation, what makes a successful collaboration – process v product?
•    What skills do you need to be successful?
•    Collaborative artists routinely position themselves at the centre of complex ecologies, how do artists negotiate that?
•    High Risk practices – how do artists manage risk?
•    How do artists successfully work in context? What are the challenges?
•    Artist care. What responsibility do artists have to themselves? How do you ensure you meet that?
•    Where do artists look for support, what are the models of best practice? What’s being met, what’s not quite hitting the mark?
•    What would a European Arts Education resource for the collaborative sector look like?

Afternoon:

Guest artist Joshua Sofaer. Artist Joshua Sofaer will construct a special exploratory session for the afternoon.  Sofaer is an artist who is centrally concerned with modes of collaboration and participation, often with an irreverent use of humour.  Utilising the data from a widely circulated Artist Learning needs survey as a starting point, Joshua will shape an active exploratory session in which participants will share, learn and investigate.  This active learning experience will provide space for a multitude of voices, provoking and informing in equal measure.

Biographies

VIRTUAL KEYNOTE - Grant Kester

Grant Kester is Professor of Art History, and Director of the University Art Gallery at the University of California, San Diego. Kester is one of the leading figures in the emerging critical dialogue around “relational” or “dialogical” art practices. His publications include Art, Activism and Oppositionality: Essays from Afterimage (Duke University Press, 1998),Conversation Pieces: Community and Communication in Modern Art (University of California Press, 2004) and The One and the Many: Contemporary Collaborative Art in a Global Context (Duke University Press, 2011). His curatorial projects include “Unlimited Partnerships: Collaboration in Contemporary Art” at CEPA Gallery in Buffalo, New York in 2000 and “Groundworks: Environmental Collaborations in Contemporary Art” at Carnegie Mellon University in 2005. Kester's essays have been published in The Blackwell Companion to Contemporary Art Since 1945 (Blackwell, 2005), Theory in Contemporary Art Since 1945 (Blackwell, 2004), Poverty and Social Welfare in America: An Encyclopedia (ABC-Clio, 2004), Politics and Poetics: Radical Aesthetics for the Classroom (St. Martins Press, 1999), the Encyclopedia of Aesthetics (Oxford University Press, 1998), and Ethics, Information and Technology: Readings(McFarland, 1997) as well as journals including Afterimage, Art Journal, E-Flux Journal, October,Variant (Scotland), Public Art Review, Exposure, The Nation, Third Text, Social Text and Art Papers. He is currently completing an anthology of writings by art collectives working in Latin America, in collaboration with Bill Kelley.

GUEST ARTIST - Joshua Sofaer

Joshua Sofaer is an artist who is centrally concerned with modes of collaboration and participation. Often with an irreverent use of humour, he plays with established forms of production, appropriating and reconfiguring the chat show, competition, lecture, or museum display. He acts as curator, producer or director of a broad range of projects, including large-scale events, intimate performances, and publications.

Sofaer was a winner of the first Bank of America CREATE Art Award and was the first Artist Fellow on the 2010/11 Clore Leadership Programme.

Works currently in production include Mon cœur s'ouvre à ta voix a new commission for Folkoperan Stockholm; Improbability Drive a collaboration with Geheimagentur for the Foreign Affairs Festival in Berlin; and Lot of Noses, a series of 500 photographs of fake noses from Sofaer’s collection for the Wellcome Trust in London. http://www.joshuasofaer.com

Dr Susanne Burns

Susanne Burns who is a senior arts leader, freelance management consultant and trainer with 28 years of senior management experience in the cultural sector in the UK. Her work has encompassed dance, theatre, music and the visual arts.

She has led several major evaluation projects including the longitudinal evaluation of In Harmony Liverpool and a major national youth dance intervention, Next Steps. She is currently evaluating Arts and Health programmes for Merseyside Primary Care Trust and a youth arts programme at Middlesborough Institute of Modern Art.

She is also currently the Project Director for Art Works – a new special initiative led by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation. She has extensive experience of working in Higher Education as she was Head of Management at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts from 1994 -2001 and continues to work as an Associate for the Institute of Cultural Capital in Liverpool. She has a doctorate from Middlesex University.

Lindsey Fryer

Lindsey Fryer has been Head of Learning at Tate Liverpool since 1999. The team researches and designs artist led learning programmes and spaces for and with a diverse audience of children, young people and adults across the city, the region and beyond. Lindsey is part of the Senior Management Team and the Programme Group that deliver exhibitions, learning, interpretation and audience development programmes. She was the lead in developing the exhibition project The Fifth Floor : Ideas Taking Space with Peter Gorschlueter and leads its legacy that aims to inform integrated curatorial approaches to the work of the museum. Lindsey co-founded the Tate Liverpool Research Centre with Dr Christoph Grunenberg, recently revised with the current Artistic Director, Francesco Manacorda as The Museum as Learning Machine.'

Lynnette Moran

Lynnette Moran is a Creative Arts Producer, Director and Performance Maker working across and between art forms. In 2009 Lynnette founded Live Collision, an international producing template redefining the ways artists create, engage and collide through live performance and digital platforms. In the same year she established Live Collision International Festival, an annual international festival and residency; generating a significant platform for the creation, articulation and presentation of dynamic contemporary performance in Ireland.

Lynnette also manages the Learning Development Programme strand at Create and she curates and produces the annual From Context to Exhibition event - work arising from the LD Programme, which is an experiential learning programme in partnership with NCAD and the LAB. Lynnette has an MA in Performance from Goldsmiths College, University of London and a BA Honours Degree in Electronic Media from the University of Wolverhampton. Lynnette has extensive experience producing diverse and multi form programmes, festivals and events. In 2012, Lynnette was selected by the European Festival Association (EFA) to take part in ‘Atelier’ for Young Festival Directors in Ljubljana 2012, following on from her involvement in SPACE (Supporting Performing Arts Circulation in Europe) managed by ONDA, Paris. Board Director of RUA RED Gallery in Dublin, Lynnette also curates, hosts and takes part in a number of public fora. She is an advisor, commentator, educator, a self-proclaimed cultural leader and an initiator of many types of platforms that carve out new ways of making and presenting live performance work, as well as critically engaging both artists and audiences.

She has a BA Hons Degree in Fine Art Film Making from the University of Wolverhampton (UK) and in 2004 graduated with an MA in Performance Making from Goldsmiths College, London.

Minna Tarkka

Minna Tarkka has been active as critic, producer and educator in media art and design. As cultural producer, she has managed digital art and design projects for museums and the web. In 1990-91, she was directing MUU artist’s association and in 1994, she was programme director of the Helsinki ISEA symposium. In 1996-2001 she was professor of interactive and multimedia communication at the Media Lab, University of Art and Design Helsinki, Finland, where she initiated study and research projects in digital museums, interactive television and critical art and design practice. Currently she is finishing her doctoral thesis on media design discourses at the National Consumer Research Centre and is chair of m-cult, center for new media culture, Helsinki.

Aaron Wright

Aaron is Company Manager for the London based Live Art Development Agency where he produces a number of the agency’s key projects and is currently co-editing the Live Art Almanac Volume 3. Aaron is also working with performance artist The Famous Lauren Barri Holstein on her show Splat! which opens at the Barbican in 2013. Aaron has worked with a number of other organisations including the BBC, Fierce Festival and Capsule. Aaron completed an MA in film and a BA in English and Drama at The University of Birmingham.
