Work in progress. Rhona Byrne, 2013.

Cowper Care, Dementia Care Unit, Dublin with support from Create have commissioned artist Rhona Byrne to develop a new site-specific project. The project involves exploring the notion of immersive and embodied landscapes with staff, family and patients at Cowper Care. Following a period of time spent in the unit, screening selected films, audio works, exploring colour and materials, the aim is to produce of a series of wearable sensory security blankets and construct a new sheltered space along the corridor of the care unit.

Artist Biography

Rhona Byrne is an Irish artist and educator based in Dublin who graduated from NCAD with a BFA in Sculpture in 1994. Rhona makes sculptural objects, context and site specific spatial environments that often are host to events and social interaction, combining sculpture, performance and processes of partcipation that explore a negotiation of object, place and social practice. Her art practice employs an interdisciplinary approach often collaborating with diverse industries, groups and individuals. Rhona’s creative process involves extensive research into a place, people and everyday relations. From releasing pigeons from a building, creating spatial audio environments, organising umbrella shielded urban walking tours, creating wearable structures, constructing shelters, touring roller coaster choirs and inflatable sculptures, her work invites the viewer to experience imaginary mental and perceptual spaces as much as a shared embodied one.

Note: Cowper Care is an approved Charity owned and operated by the United Church of Ireland Dioceses of Dublin and Glendalough that provides care to older people on an inter-denominational basic determined by need through the provision of Respite Care; Day Care; Extended Care; Dementia Care; Sheltered Independent Living.
